Mind the gap: Unlocking Odoo’s untapped AI potential
Odoo has built a range of useful AI features into its core. But these work from the inside out: within specific views, on records you have already opened, for actions the module developer anticipated.
Teams spend their day in external AI tools. They want to ask Claude about their pipeline, have Cursor pull last month's invoice totals, or let ChatGPT draft a chatter note without having to switch tools or context.
Starting in v20, Odoo will introduce a native MCP server for Enterprise users. This gives AI assistants a built-in endpoint to securely search your database, inspect fields, and read records straight out of the box. However, it does come with some limitations for users who:
- Need advanced write capabilities
- Want to embed AI directly into specific workflows
- Are on either Community or Enterprise editions
- Run AI on Odoo 16-19 and need it available for previous versions.
This is why we built our own MCP Server module for Odoo. It exposes a native Model Context Protocol (MCP) endpoint directly from Odoo, so any MCP-compatible assistant can reach your live data with the right permissions, the right schema, and no manual copy-pasting.
Comparing side-by-side the two MCP server solutions

The Odoo MCP Server by much. gives teams total control over their AI workflows
The module allows external AI assistants to communicate directly and execute tasks, all while maintaining strict access controls and ensuring system stability. It brings benefits like;
CRUD or read-only flexibilityUsers can query data safely in read-only mode, or enable full create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) permissions to automate routine tasks. Read-only sessions can be enabled by admins via a checkbox on sign-in and automatically hide and block all write operations. | Cross-software workflowsAI assistants living on the user’s machine can read local spreadsheets or desktop documents and update Odoo in a single step. This fully eliminates manual copy-pasting between apps. | No vendor lock-inA single standard MCP integration connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Copilot, or local models, letting teams switch AI providers at any time. |
Granular per-model permissionsEvery AI action respects existing Odoo access rights, giving admins exact model-by-model control over read, create, write, delete, and method execution permissions. | Automatic user contextWhen the AI connects, Odoo automatically provides the caller's identity, timezone, and active company details. This keeps the assistant from guessing contexts or filing records under the wrong company in multi-company setups. | Targeted business logic executionAdmins can expose controlled server actions (i.e., confirming a sale order or approving an expense report) as targeted single-purpose tools that run specific business logic safely without opening broad database write access. |
Smart file and attachment handlingThe assistant uses direct Odoo resource links to view images and document attachments on demand, keeping chats fast and responsive. | Rate limiting and audit loggingBuilt-in per-user request limits protect server performance, while an integrated audit log inside Odoo tracks every AI action, login attempt, and denied request. | Granular permission managementAdmins can give the AI model access to specific tasks like confirming a sales order or approving an expense report, so it can handle routine actions safely without full edit permissions. |
Odoo MCP Server (by much.) use cases
The Odoo MCP Server by much. connects conversational AI assistants directly into your business operations. Teams across every department can look up records and run daily tasks straight from their AI chat. Here’s how:
Sales & CRM
When managing your pipeline, you can tell your AI assistant, "Show me all leads from Spain that haven't been contacted in 30 days".
The assistant queries your CRM data in natural language and can follow up by updating deal stages or creating new quotations or sales orders directly in Odoo.
Helpdesk
To handle client inquiries on the fly, prompt your assistant with "Look up the latest order history and stock status for company A".
The assistant retrieves live Odoo data to answer customer questions instantly, while allowing you to create or update contact records right from the chat.
Inventory
When monitoring stock levels, ask your AI assistant "Which products are low in stock?" to spot shortages.
You can then immediately instruct it to adjust catalogue prices or update inventory records inside Odoo without manually clicking through menus.
Accounting
Instead of generating complex accounting reports, ask your AI assistant to "List all overdue invoices and unpaid customer balances".
The AI pulls direct database insights into your conversation so you can review financial status in seconds.
Projects
To keep team workloads on track, prompt your assistant with "Show me all overdue tasks for the maintenance team".
The AI assistant checks current project progress and lets you assign new tickets or update task statuses in Odoo, straight from your prompt.
HR
For internal operations, ask your AI assistant: "What is employee A’s remaining leave balance?"
It retrieves employee details instantly, and you can instruct it to schedule calendar meetings and archive outdated records automatically in Odoo.
Keep your AI integrations safe & compliant

OAuth 2.1 & secure authenticationShips with a full OAuth 2.1 server featuring PKCE, dynamic client registration, and rotating refresh tokens. The native MCP endpoint and Odoo login (OAuth 2.1) require Odoo 18 or 19. On v16 and 17, the module connects through the local bridge client with API keys. | Ongoing version compatibilityProvides full protocol support across Odoo 16, 17, 18, and 19 and in both Community & Enterprise editions. |
Structured for enterprise operationsSupports chatter updates, field inspection, attachments, binary retrieval, and server action tools. | Built and supported by Odoo experts in the EUDeveloped in-house by much. Consulting and maintained by a dedicated Odoo product team. |

Odoo MCP Server by much. FAQs
Which Odoo hosting & version is the Odoo MCP Server by much. compatible with?
Our module supports Odoo 16, 17, 18, and 19. It works on Odoo.sh, self-hosted, and on-premise instances.
How does the Odoo MCP Server by much. handle user permissions and security?
The AI assistant inherits the exact permissions of the logged-in Odoo user. If a user cannot access a record in Odoo, the AI assistant cannot see or modify it.
Do I need to host a separate bridge program or server?
Not for Odoo 18 and Odoo 19. Odoo speaks MCP natively via a Streamable HTTP endpoint at /mcp. A local bridge client (uvx mcp-server-odoo) is only needed for stdio-only desktop CLI tools.
Can I use the MCP Server to create multi-step workflows on Odoo and the software I integrated with my Odoo database?
Yes. The assistant sits outside Odoo, so it can chain several Odoo tool calls (search → read → update → post to chatter) and combine them with whatever else that client can reach (i.e., other MCP servers, local files, spreadsheets). Admins can wrap a multi-step Odoo process in a single custom tool backed by a server action (e.g. confirm_sale_order), instead of exposing generic create/write.
Which AI clients are supported in the Odoo MCP Server module by much.?
It supports any client compatible with Anthropic's Model Context Protocol, including Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Cursor, VS Code, Perplexity, and Mistral Le Chat.
Can I restrict AI assistants to read-only access?
Yes. Users can untick "Allow creating and modifying data" on the consent screen. Write tools are completely hidden from the AI model during that session.
