How to run Odoo from your AI via an MCP server

17 September 2026

Your AI assistant can summarise what you paste into it. It can write your follow-up emails and even create reports from data you feed it.

What it can’t do is connect with your Odoo to read, write, and create entries directly in the system.

With an MCP server, that barrier disappears. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, can automate your processes directly from your AI assistant.

Just type your request into Claude, ChatGPT, or any other assistant, and it will confirm sales orders or create activities for your teams directly in the project app, for example.

The new Odoo 20 MCP server will help you execute some of these requests, and the Odoo MCP Server by much. fills in the gaps where it can’t.

What is MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard, developed by Anthropic, that gives AI assistants a universal way to connect to business systems.

Instead of pasting data into a chat, the assistant reads from and acts on the live system through a defined, permissioned interface.

Because MCP is an open standard, you're never locked into one AI provider. You can switch from Claude to ChatGPT tomorrow, or use multiple models at once, and the connection stays the same.

MCP isn't tied to any one system either, so any software that holds business data can expose an MCP server for an assistant to connect to.

Odoo sits at the centre of a company - it’s where sales, projects, HR and accounting all live in one database. As an open-source ERP, it’s the ideal candidate for an MCP server connection. The question is: which MCP server is best, and how much control does it give you?

Does Odoo offer MCP capabilities out of the box?

Odoo 19 brought native AI into the core: AI agents, AI fields, AI server actions and more. But these features work from the inside out. They exist only in Odoo and are often specific to certain apps or records.

Most teams, however, spend their day in external AI tools. They want to ask Claude about their pipeline or have ChatGPT draft a chatter note without switching tools. For that, the AI assistant needs a way into Odoo from the outside.

With Odoo 20, Enterprise users get a native MCP server (module ai_mcp). The bridge disappears: your Odoo instance becomes the MCP server itself, with a single /mcp endpoint that AI assistants connect to directly.

Out of the box, it ships five read-only tools:

  • Context: returns the current user, timezone and company

  • Model listing: shows which models the user is allowed to reach

  • Field inspection: describes a model's fields

  • Search: searches and reads records

  • Grouped reads: aggregates data for simple analytics.

Odoo MCP Server by much. adds on to Odoo’s native MCP

Odoo’s native MCP server lets an AI client talk to Odoo over MCP without a layer in between.  Users don’t need external Python packages translating the protocol on the side, which is the usual setup with community MCP gateways.

For users who have previously connected an MCP server to their Odoo, the native MCP server is a game-changer. The bridge between your AI assistant and Odoo 20 is gone, and your instance becomes the MCP server itself.

Odoo 20's MCP server is also read-first by design, which is a good safety standard. It’s enough for an assistant to explore a database, answer questions and build reports.

However, it leaves a few gaps if you want your AI to act directly in your Odoo:

  • Odoo’s native MCP server doesn’t openly list write tools for your AI assistant, even if they do exist

  • Once a write action is enabled, calls go through without an interactive confirmation step at the Odoo layer

  • There's no rate limiting, no audit log and no per-model control over what the AI can create, update or delete

  • It’s Enterprise v20 only, so if you're on Community or still running Odoo 16–19, the native server isn't available to you.

To take AI in Odoo even further, we built our own MCP server. The free module exposes a native MCP endpoint directly from Odoo. Once it's installed, your AI assistant can:

  • Safely ask questions to your AI in read-only mode, or enable full create, read, update, and delete (CRUD) permissions to automate routine tasks

  • Allow read-only sessions via a checkbox on sign-in for admins and automatically hide and block all write operations

  • Create and update records, like leads, quotes, tasks or timesheets, if you allow it

  • Run specific business logic, such as confirming a sales order, through single-purpose tools you define

  • Open attachments and images on demand, straight from Odoo.

How to set up the much. Odoo MCP Server module

Connecting AI tools to Odoo can be done via three methods: OAuth 2.1 user login, API keys and a local stdio bridge client.

Which connection method should you use?

  • For Odoo 18, 19 and onwards: Odoo speaks MCP natively at /mcp. Log in with your Odoo account (OAuth 2.1) or use an API key

  • For Odoo 16 & 17: Connect through the local bridge client (uvx mcp-server-odoo) with an API key - this is also handy for desktop CLI tools that only support stdio.

Our CEO, Simon Stappen, explains how to configure our MCP server, from installing the module in Odoo to asking your first question in Claude.

Or just follow these steps, and your setup is done:

  1. Download the Odoo MCP Server module by much. from the Odoo App Store

  2. Enable models and assign operation permissions in Odoo in the Settings app

  3. Add your Odoo URL ([https://your-odoo.com/mcp](https://your-odoo.com/mcp)) to your AI client

  4. Log in with your Odoo account and approve access.

Once connected, your AI assistant becomes an Odoo agent. These are a few prompts to get started and what they do:

CRM / Sales

Create: "Create a quote for Deco Addict based on our last order to them"

Update: "Create call activities for Jane Doe in the CRM. Do it for all leads that have no future activity set, for two weeks after the last closed activity".

Projects

Read: "Which of my active projects are over budget or behind schedule?"

Create: "Create a new task for Development on the Acme Website Relaunch project today and allocate 3h".

Manufacturing

Update: "Move all confirmed manufacturing orders for Customisable Desks to next Monday; the CNC machine is down for maintenance".

Recruitment

Delete: "Delete all rejected applicants from more than 6 months ago, in line with our GDPR policy".

Accounting

Read: "Which customer invoices are overdue by more than 30 days and haven't been followed up on?"

Delete: "Delete the duplicate draft vendor bills from Northwind Traders that we imported this morning".

Tips to keep your system secure when using the Odoo MCP Server

When connecting AI to a live system via MCP, users are faced with two main concerns: where does my data go, and who controls it?

Here's how the much. Odoo MCP server answers them:

  • Your AI inherits the exact access rights of the logged-in Odoo user. If they can't see a record, neither can the AI

  • Admins can manage who uses the MCP server and for what (read or write access) at a granular level

  • In read-only sessions, write tools are completely hidden from the AI model

  • Every AI action, login attempt and denied request is logged in Odoo, and per-user rate limits protect server performance

  • For strict data policies, you can connect self-hosted open-source models, or commercial models via EU cloud hosting with custom encryption keys and zero data retention.

Odoo MCP Server FAQs

Can I create or update records with the Odoo 20 MCP server?

Not out of the box. All five tools that ship with Odoo 20's native MCP server are read-only at launch. Write actions exist in the Odoo AI module, but an admin has to enable each one, and there's no confirmation step once they're live. The much. Odoo MCP Server lets you choose create, update and delete rights per model, with human-in-the-loop confirmation configurable per tool.

Do I need to upgrade to Odoo 20 to connect Odoo to AI with MCP?

No. The much. Odoo MCP Server works on Odoo 16, 17, 18 and 19, so you can connect your AI tools to Odoo today. If you move to Odoo 20 later, the native server and the much. module use different endpoints and scopes, so they won't clash.

How much does the Odoo MCP server cost?

The Odoo MCP Server by much. is free on the Odoo App Store for both Community and Enterprise users on versions 16-19. You only pay for the AI assistant you connect to it. Odoo 20's native MCP server is part of Odoo Enterprise, so it requires an Enterprise subscription.

Is it safe to connect an AI assistant to my Odoo via the MCP server?

Yes. Your AI assistant inherits the access rights of the Odoo user who signs in. If that user can't see a record, neither can the AI. Admins choose which models are available and whether a session is read-only, and every action, login and denied request is logged in Odoo.
